Most people are familiar with terrariums — but a vivarium is something different. The word itself signals a shift in intention: from a container for plants to a container for life, designed with the complexity, layering, and ecological relationships of a living landscape in mind. This workshop introduces participants to the practice as it is understood by collectors, botanical artists, and aquascape designers around the world — where a glass container becomes a miniature world, where moss is a carpet and driftwood is a fallen tree, and where the whole composition is arranged with the same intentionality and care one would bring to a painting or a garden.
Over the course of an afternoon, participants will learn the foundational principles of naturalistic vivarium design — hardscape composition, substrate layering, plant selection and placement, and the basics of long-term ecological care. Participants will leave with a completed vivarium ready for display, a solid working knowledge of closed ecosystem design, and a new appreciation for the extraordinary complexity of forest landscapes.
What's Included A curated selection of rare and unusual tropical plants, prepared substrate, hardscape materials, a glass vessel with freestanding display light for the sustained growth of the plants in the vivarium, and all necessary tools needed for the build. Participants take their vivarium home the same day. Please inform the instructor if travel packaging will be needed for out of state return travel by air or ground transportation, or if overnight shipping will be utilized.
All materials are provided. No prior experience is necessary — beginners are not just welcome, they are the intended audience.
Class size is intentionally small. Reserve your spot early. Individuals may attend alone or a family may build a single vivarium together. Pricing is per vivarium case.
No experience necessary — just creative curiosity and a willingness to experiment.
In this 3-hour hands-on class, you'll explore the fluid, unpredictable, and endlessly surprising world of water-based media — including watercolor, ink, and gouache — through the lens of abstract painting. Water media has a life of its own. It bleeds, blooms, layers, and resists in ways that no other medium does, and in abstraction, those qualities become your greatest creative tools rather than problems to solve.
You'll experiment with color mixing, wet-on-wet and wet-on-dry techniques, mark-making, layering, and composition — learning to work with the natural movement of the materials rather than against them. By the end of class you'll have a small collection of completed works, a set of foundational skills you can take home and keep building on, and a new relationship with the joy of making something without a predetermined outcome.
All materials are provided. No previous painting experience is required — only curiosity.
