No experience necessary — just creative curiosity and a willingness to experiment.
In this 3-hour hands-on class, you'll explore the fluid, unpredictable, and endlessly surprising world of water-based and mixed media — through the lens of abstract painting. Water media has a life of its own. It bleeds, blooms, layers, and resists in ways that no other medium does, and in abstraction, those qualities become your greatest creative tools rather than problems to solve. With dry media like color pencils, chalk pastel, and oil pastel, you’ll experiment with layer mark-making on top of the painted surface to create depth, texture, and visual integration throughout the painting.
You'll experiment with color mixing, wet-on-wet and wet-on-dry techniques, mark-making, layering, and composition — learning to work with the natural movement of the materials rather than against them. By the end of class you'll have a small collection of completed works, a set of foundational skills you can take home and keep building on, and a new relationship with the joy of making something without a predetermined outcome.
